JOHANNESBURG, Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe, at the centre of a storm in South Africa for allegedly assaulting a South African model, has been granted diplomatic immunity, and is reportedly back in Zimbabwe.

South African International Relations and Co-operation Minister Nkoane-Mashabane signed the order for diplomatic immunity Saturday and a Government Gazette notice to this effect was published on Sunday. The Department says it would release a statement later.

Meanwhile the debate has begun on the implications of the diplomatic immunity apparently granted by South Africa to Grace Mugabe. Pictures on Zimbabwe state media showed that Grace Mugabe returned to Harare Saturday night with her husband, President Robert Mugabe, despite facing an assault charge in South Africa.

She was facing assault charges in South Africa after she allegedly struck South African model Gabriella Engels in the face with an extension cord in a Sandton, Johannesburg, hotel last weekend.

Non-governmental organizarion (NGO) AfriForum lawyer Willie Spies said if it was confirmed that Grace Mugabe was granted immunity, they would launch a judicial review of the South African government's action.

Spies also said if Grace Mugabe was not granted immunity, she is now a fugitive from South African justice, meaning she would face arrest if she returned to this country.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe State radio reported that President Mugabe and his wife had returned home from South Africa early Sunday morning. President Mugabe had attended the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Pretoria on Saturday and Sunday but did not attend Sunday's session.
