A SHURUGWI primary school teacher was left hospitalised after he was attacked by a gang of machete-wielding thugs on Wednesday night.

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) said Admire Mhike, who heads Jobolingo Primary School, was attacked by unknown assailants.

Mhike was left with serious injuries on the head, face and arm.

“Comrades, we inform you of the attack on the headmaster of Jobolingo Primary, Cde Admire Mhike, in Shurugwi by a gang of machete wielding criminals who attacked him around 11pm last night,” the PTUZ wrote on its Facebook page.

“He was savagely attacked and was left with very deep cuts on his head, face and right arm. He was the only staff member at the school taking his Grade 7 class for some holiday lessons implying the kids have been left with no shepherd.”

The PTUZ said the thugs first burgled a local clinic before they turned on Mhike.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and urge the police to leave no stone unturned in looking for the criminals.”

Mhike is currently receiving treatment at a Gweru hospital.

Dorcas Ndhlela, who is said to be close to Mhike, said his face was swollen when she visited him in hospital.

“It’s quite painful to see how our comrade was hurt,” she said.

“When we went to see him his face was swollen. But hopefully he will get better. The police are still looking into the matter so that these culprits will be put behind bars.”

The militant trade union has in the past claimed victimisation by the state and Zanu PF supporters for its vocal stance on teachers’ issues.
