HARARE, More than 300 officers were suspended from the Zimbabwe Republic Police last year for various offences, Parliament heard on Wednesday.

Home Affairs (Interior) Deputy Minister Obedingwa Mguni said in the National Assembly question-and-answer session that 357 police officers were suspended last year for doing other things that are outside their work.

Police officers, especially from the traffic section, have gained notoriety for the wrong reasons, chief among them demanding bribes from motorists.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, more than 500 police officers were dismissed from the force in 2015 for corrupt activities relating to spot fines at roadblocks.

There has been a countrywide outcry over police roadblocks which are said to be affecting tourism.

More than 50 per cent of tourists interviewed during a recent Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency survey said they would not return to the country after being harassed by police at roadblocks.
