CAPE TOWN, The South African Communist Party (SACP), a partner of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the Tripartite Alliance, has joined South African opposition parties and groups in welcoming the resignation of Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Mduduzi Manana.

Manana resigned Sunday after being charged with assaulting two women at a nightclub in Sandton, Johannesburg, two weeks ago.

The SACP's Second Deputy General Secretary, Solly Mapaila, expressed these sentiments when was addressing the 96th anniversary of the party in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Sunday.

We want to thank him for taking this courageous step to step aside rather than to continue to contaminate the important office that he occupies on behalf of our people. How we wish the one who accepted his resignation President Jacob Zuma, could do the same, added Mapaila

South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the ANC have also welcomed the resignation. DA Member of Parliament Belinda Bozzoli said it was high time that those who abuse women, especially those in positions of power, are being held to account.

Bozzoli said: He is not a good role model for young students. He beat up a woman, he confessed to beating up a woman two weeks ago. Unfortunately President (Jacob) Zuma didn't see fit to fire him immediately as he should have done. So we are pleased that he has resigned, but we still think that there is a long way to go. He should still appear in court and we wait to see if he will resign as a member of parliament as well.
