A senior Central Intelligence Official Magna Mudyiwa won Friday’s by-election, garnering 9 837 votes against her competitor, George Kawaza of the National Constitutional Assembly who got a paltry 107 votes in Mudzi.

The seat fell vacant following the death of former Zanu PF Mashonaland East Province women’s league boss Aquillina Katsande in March. The MDC-T and other opposition parties boycotted the elections citing lack of electoral reforms.

A total of 10 056 votes were cast while 112 votes were spoiled.

Speaking to journalists after the announcement of results, Mudyiwa said her focus now was on developing the poverty-stricken constituency.

“Elections are over and I am happy that I have won. My focus now is on bringing development to the constituency. The roads are bad. This area is dry and there is need to source food. This means I have to work hard for the people,” said Mudyiwa.

Attention in Mashonaland East province is now on the September 19 Marondera Central by-election. The seat fell vacant following the recall of Ray Kaukonde from Parliament after his expulsion from Zanu PF.

Zanu PF’s Lawrence Katsiru will be battling it out with Wadzanai Mabika (NCA), Solomon Makaza (Transform Zimbabwe) and Kingdom Nyika (Freedom Front Party).
