HARARE, Zimbabwe's Industry and Commerce Minister, Mike Bimha, has announced an 11-member board for the National Competitiveness Commission (NCC), with veteran industrialist Kumbirai Katsande as chairman.

The NCC, which replaces the former National Incomes and Pricing Commission, is part of several initiatives the government is taking to improve the ease of doing business in the country.

Its tasks will include reviewing all new government business, continuously scanning the environment, monitoring the cost drivers and advising on measures to be taken to address emerging challenges.

Katsande will have a former University of Zimbabwe lecturer and industrialist, Tracy Mutaviri, as his deputy chairman, while other members include Schweppes Managing Director Charles Msipa, lawyer Maureen Chitewe and Charles Mujajati a senior civil servant.

One more member will be appointed in due course after consultations.

Bimha said the appointments came after a lengthy due diligence process. "It has been a long road and this landmark development will now enable the NCC to start work seriously on improving the business environment through the development, co-ordination and implementation of key policy improvements," he said.

"The guiding objective will be to enhance Zimbabwe's competitiveness by proposing policy recommendations that will create an economy which will attract both domestic and foreign investment."
