HARARE, The government of Zimbabwe has approved a 1.0 billion US dollars grant to fund the establishment of Zimbabwe’s first graduate school, the Robert Gabriel Mugabe University (RGMU), to be built in Mazowe in Mashonaland Central province.

The institution, to be managed by the Robert Mugabe Foundation, is being established in honour of President Mugabe’s “commitment to education and exemplary leadership”, says Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo.

President Mugabe and First Lady Grace Mugabe are the founding trustees of the Robert Mugabe Foundation.

Moyo said here Wednesday that the university would be the first 100 per cent Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) institution in the country.

“?The academic thrust of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe University will concentrate on critical STEM areas almost exclusively at graduate level to produce super specialists and super experts who will champion Zimbabwe’s industrialisation and modernization for sustainable socio-economic transformation and development,” Moyo added.

It will cost more than the one billion USD seed capital to complete the university, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, Moyo said, adding that various working groups had been set up to address different issues related to the setting up of the university, including financing.
