HARARE, The Zimbabwe Staff College, a military training institution, will offer degree programmes beginning next year the Zimbabwe Defence Force strives to empower its members, says Army Commander Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda.

Two degree programmes would be introduced at the college next year, he said at a graduation ceremony for logistics officers here Tuesday.

"I also wish to take this opportunity to inform you that in line with its new mandate, vision and mission the college is vigorously working to introduce two degree programmes in 2018, namely the Bachelor of Arts (Honors) Degree in Defence and Security Studies and on the logistics front a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Defence Logistics," he said.

"The degree in defence logistics shall be a four-year programme offered by the ZSC, in conjunction with the Chinhoyi University of Science and Technology," he said.

Gen Sibanda said it was important for military officers to study logistics as experience had shown that gaps existed. "The Zimbabwe National Army's experiences in past campaigns and operations revealed that our logistics planners and implementers at various levels were considerably less proficient in planning, co-ordinating and executing logistics tasks," he said.

"The new circumstances require that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces address a number of fundamental issues and one of the most pivotal is to do with logistics. More and better logistics planning is needed to deal with the various contingencies confronting us today," he said.

He said there were also non-traditional security threats which demanded enhanced capabilities, hence the need for officers to have logistical skills.
