The Zimbabwe government has signed a contract with Chinese company Sino-Hydro to construct THE Kunzvi dam with plans at an advanced stage to carry out the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environment, Water and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri.

She told New Ziana here Wednesday that the EIA would also establish the number of people to be affected by construction of the dam.

“Government policy is that wherever there are such major developments, many people will be displaced so we are going to carry out that exercise to make sure that component is addressed,” she said.

The Kunzvi dam project has suffered numerous delays and controversies over the years, with many bidders vying and falling by the wayside for the multi-million dollar contract.

Muchinguri-Kashiri said the government and Sino-Hydro had agreed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) deal which would be less financially burdensome for the country.

The Kunzvi Dam, which is to be situated on the Nyagui River in Goromonzi district, Mashonaland East province, has been touted as the panacea to Harare’s water problems as it is upstream of the city and treatment of its water will be less costly than for Lake Chiwero which is heavily polluted from sewerage water and effluent from industries.

Muchinguri-Kashiri said other companies had also approached the government for the construction of two other dams for Chitungwiza town. “I cannot pre-empt the action being taken but will be briefing the nation on progress that we are making in the projects,” she said.

She said the government had been facing problems with the completion of Tokwe Mukosi dam which is 95 per cent complete due to some misunderstandings with the contractor but the issue had since been resolved.
