RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA-Zimbabwe have won the 2017 Cosafa Cup tournament after defeating neighbours Zambia 3-1 in the final at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium at Phokeng, near here, on Sunday to win the soccer tournament for southern African nations for a fifth time.

Zambia had an early chance to take the lead with Mwila Phiri's free kick from the edge of the penalty box deflected over the goalposts by defender Webster Mulenga.

Zimbabwe keeper George Chigova then pulled off a save to deny Jackson Chirwa a goal. It was Zimbabwe who opened the scoring with Knox Mutizwa outjumping keeper, Allan Chibwe, to score.

The Zambians had an opportunity to equalise immediately after the re-start but Brian Mwila failed to capitalize. Both sides went on the offensive with Mutizwa coming close to doubling Zimbabwe's lead only for his effort to be stopped by Chibwe.

Substitute Lubinda Mundia, who had just come on for injured John Katiba, scored with his first touch of the ball to equalise for Zambia. Mtizwa had yet another opportunity to score his second goal of the match in the second half only for Chibwe to deny him.

The Zimbabweans' continued pressure paid off when Talent Chawapiwa scored after Mtizwa's effort rebounded off the upright. An unmarked Ocean Mushure then beat Chibwe from close range to extend Zimbabwe's lead in the 67th minute. Chigova pulled off a great save at the death to deny Godfrey Ngwenya a goal.

Three-1 to Zimbabwe was how it ended.
