Zimbabwean cement manufacturer PPC Zimbabwe says it has put on hold plans to set up a clinker plant in Rushinga in Mashonaland Central Province.

Clinker, the raw material used in the manufacture of cement, is formed when limestone and clay or shale are crushed to a very fine powder and then blended in the correct proportions before being heated into lumps.

In order to complete the process, a cement mill then grinds the clinker, which is mixed with a small amount of gypsum, into a fine powder.

PPC managing director Kelibone Masiyane said here Wednesday that earlier plans for such a plant had been halted. “That’s like a long-term strategy the way we are looking at it. Obviously having done this (Msasa) plant, we expect that (setting up a clinker plant) when the economy turns around in the future because right now we cannot justify any further investment like into another clinker plant,” he said.

PPC recently commissioned a 700,000-tonne cement manufacturing plant in Msasa, Harare, doubling its annual production capacity to 1. 4 million tonnes. The Msasa plant was built at a cost of 85 million US dollars.

“If we get this interim protection and support from government we do see that in the future we will start that sort of reasoning and thinking but at the moment we are not doing much in that line.”

PPC has two other plants in Bulawayo and Colleen Bawn near Gwanda with combined annual capacity of 700,000 tonnes. PPC also has operations in South Africa, Botswana and Rwanda.

Other companies in the cement manufacturing industry in Zimbabwe are Lafarge and Sino-Zim.

Last year, Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote announced plans to set up a 400 million USD cement manufacturing plant in Zimbabwe with a capacity to produce 1. 5 million tonnes per year.
