On the eve of the veteran leader turning 91, a youth leader in President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU (PF) party said they had endorsed the long-time rule for another term.

ZANU (PF) National Youth Commissar Innocent Hamandishe, said Mugabe’s birthday party in 2018, the year the next elections are scheduled, would be bigger than the one scheduled for the end of this month, to coincide with his participation in the polls.

Mugabe turns 91 this Saturday and as has become the norm, the 21st February Movement has organised a birthday bash for him in Victoria Falls next weekend.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Celebrating the birth of Gushungo, the icon of Zimbabwe’s revolution and champion of youth empowerment.”

Hamandishe, who is the chairperson for the 21st February Movement Organizing Committee, said despite the fact that this year’s celebration was “quite big” the youths were making more efforts to make it bigger in 2018, the year they hope to have President Mugabe getting another “resounding” victory in the presidential polls.

“Of course we want to make this year’s event big but we want to double the number of participants in the 21st Movement in 2018 because as youths we have already chosen our candidate for 2018. That is His Excellency, President Mugabe,” said Hamandishe.

Mugabe, who has ruled the Southern African country since independence from Britain in 1980, will be 94 in 2018.

Hamandishe meanwhile said preparations for this year’s event were at an aance stage.

He said this time, organisers , local firms will supply material for the party.

Tenders for toilets and tents will be done in Victoria Falls.

“We want local suppliers this time, we want to localize the celebrations we want to avoid a situation where people will be doing and has the material taken back to Harare, Everything will be done and supplied local except for one or two things will be brought from Harare,” said Hamandishe.

Hamandishe said the movement had always faced a numerous stumbling blocks among them the serious one being shortage of financial resources.

He accused some business organization for being “unsupportive.”

“We have friends who come and assist yet we have others do not want to support but come only on the day to sell their products.

“They do not come during the preparations to support but when all has been set they come and want to sell their products.”

The president’s birthday celebrations have been a yearly, glamorous event since the inception of the 21st February Movement in 1986.

This year, children will converge at the Victoria Falls Farm School on February 27 for the birthday reception. Mugabe will only jet into the resort town the following day for the main event at Elephant Hills Hotel.

The crowd expected has doubled, with organisers of the event saying they were expecting about 20 000 people to attend.

More than 10 000 people attended Mugabe’s 90th birthday bash held in Harare.

It is reported 90 beasts were slaughtered for the occasion with costs reaching a staggering $1 million.

This year the money needed for the bash could surpass that of 2014 as the fete is being held more than 800km from the capital city.
