A TOTAL of 26 illegal Early Child Development (ECD) centres and four private colleges have been closed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Marondera since the reopening of the schools last month.

According to the Mashonaland East provincial education director, Christopher Chiota, the ministry has closed down the unregistered ECD centres and private colleges in Marondera and the exercise will be carried out soon in other districts in the province.

“I can confirm that all colleges that have been operating illegally in Marondera have been shut down,” Chiota said.

Last month, Chiota issued a public notice warning parents and guardians against enrolling their children at unregistered centres of learning and warned in the statement that the centres would be shut down on 13 January when schools opened for 2015.

“We have intensified the exercise to other districts and illegal schools will be closed. We are carrying out the exercise with the assistance of the police,” Chiota said.

Some of the ECD centres that were shut down in Marondera are Little Birds, Happy Tots, Hey Day pre-school, Little Blessings, Good Care and Marondera Study Centre while the illegal private colleges are New Era and United Success.
