A Mbare-based housebreaker who was targeting shops in Harare’s Central Business District and Chitungwiza, stealing various goods, was yesterday sentenced to eight years in prison.

Thulani Leta of Block 18 Tagarika Flats, pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances when he appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

One year was suspended on condition of good behaviour. Mr Mahwe further suspended three years on condition Leta restitutes the complainants.

He then effected four years.

Failure to pay back the complainants means that Leta will serve the suspended term.

In aggravation, prosecutor Mrs Idah Maromo aised the court that only a custodial sentence would meet the justice of the offence.

She said that cases of housebreaking were rampant hence Leta should be sent to prison for a long time to deter other would-be offenders.
