A ZANU-PF candidate will today square up with two others from MDC-T and NCA in a by-election to fill the vacant ward 24 in Gutu Rural District Council. The seat was declared vacant following the death of Cde Bakuri Kufakunavo of Zanu-PF on March 29 this year.

Zanu-PF’s Cde Tinopiwa Chatukuta will battle it out with Mrs Namatirai Chinyakata (MDC-T) and Mr Tarwirei Mugadza (NCA).

ZEC Masvingo provincial officer, Mr Zex Zirabada Pudurai, yesterday said six polling stations had been set up in the ward.

Mr Pudurai said training of polling officers and agents was also successfully.

“We are very happy with the preparations that we have done ahead of polling and all the three candidates were able to campaign freely and peacefully judging by events at some of their rallies that we attended,” he said.

Mr Pudurai said results would be announced at the collation centre at Maungwa Business Centre in the ward.

Zanu-PF is expected to romp to victory in the by election after the revolutionary party swept most of the wards in last year’s harmonised elections.

The revolutionary party regained its political dominance in Masvingo after sweeping all the 26 House of Assembly seats in the province.

The party has also been winning council by-elections held after last year’s harmonised elections and so far it has 1 501 wards against the MDC-T’s 442 countrywide.

There are 92 local authorities countrywide that consist of 1 958 wards.
