ORGANISERS of the Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year awards are expecting a flawless event when they honour players who excelled in the just-ended season at a ceremony scheduled for this Friday.

The selection panel which comprised sports journalists, club coaches and captains met in Harare last month to choose the best eleven players for the season.

The process was conducted through an electronic voting system and was supervised by a panel of experts, who included sports editors, football stakeholders, as well as Delta Beverages internal and external audit firms.

Patricia Murambinda, spokesperson for the sponsors – Delta Beverages – yesterday said they were now looking forward to a first class crowning ceremony at the banquet which is expected to bring down the curtain to an eventful year.

“We are almost done with the preparations and as usual we are expecting a top-notch event. We are really looking forward to the banquet.

“We will also take the opportunity on the night to honour league champions Dynamos for their milestone achievements.

“As you know, they won the title for the fourth time this year,” said Murambinda.

Highlanders’ Charles Sibanda is the only player who made it back on the calendar from the group that was selected last year and is among the favourites to land the top accolade.

Sibanda, however, faces stiff challenge from ZPC Kariba’s Dennis Dauda, Tendai Hove and Dynamos midfield kingpin Stephen Alimenda.

There are also dark horses in Limited Chikafa and Dynamos defender Themba Ndlovu.

Tawanda Muparati won the top prize last year but has been a shadow of himself in a season blighted by injuries.

The ceremony will also see the crowning of the Coach of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and the Rookie of the Year.

Sibanda and How Mine’s Kuda Musharu, who is also part of the 11 finalists, have already been confirmed joint winners of the Golden Boot after finishing the season with 12 goals apiece.

The Most Disciplined Team and the best performing match officials will also be recognised at the event.

Murambinda said they were also going to honour champions Dynamos who recently notched up their fourth successive league championship.
