The paDandaro Braai Festival that was supposed to take place at Belgravia Sports Club on Saturday was cancelled at the eleventh hour under unclear circumstances. The organisers had to get in touch with the artistes who were supposed to perform at the event just before kick-off time telling them the event has been cancelled.

Walter Chiyanja, one of the organisers of the event, was evasive when contacted for a comment on why they cancelled the event when revellers had turned up at the venue.

“Why are you guys from the Press now interested because we have cancelled the event?” quipped Chiyanja.

Pressed further, he said they were forced to cancel the event because the venue owners made fresh demands at the last minute.

“We had agreed with venue owners that we would incorporate them in our aerts and we have been working well but all went haywire at the last minute when they demanded a deposit of US$3 000 for the venue,” said Chiyanja.

He said they were going to pay artistes their money despite having the event cancelled.

“We have already paid them deposits of their performance fees but I will fulfil the contractual obligation by paying them their money,” he said.

Officials at the Club were not reachable for comment yesterday as calls to their phones went unanswered.

Contrary to Chiyanja’s claims, Romeo Gasa, one of the artistes who were billed to perform at the event, said he had not been paid a cent

“I have only signed a contract and they did not give me any money,” he said.

Gasa said when he called them after he was told that the show was cancelled they said they would get back to him.

“I was just told that they would call me later to discuss the payments,” he said.

The artistes that were billed to perform include Ngoni Kambarami, RockRoki, Leonard Mapfumo, Pauline Gundidza, Taurai Mandebvu and Tererai Mugwadi together with Mbare-based dancehall chanter Seh Calaz.
