A WOMAN from Rusenga village in Zimuto district in Masvingo on Tuesday stunned fellow commuters when she threw her two-month-old baby out through the window of a moving taxi.

The baby, identified as Munashe Chinzou, died on the spot while the mother, Vimbai Wapendama, 22, sustained a fractured leg after she jumped off the vehicle as she attempted to flee.

Masvingo police spokesman, Nkululeko Nduna, confirmed the incident saying investigations were underway.

Sources however, told NewZimbabwe.com that the woman might have thought the kombi crew wanted to abduct her and the child for ritual purposes.

They said when she heard the kombi crew joke that “zvedu zvaita,” (we have made it) she probably thought that she was now in captivity. Police declined to comment on the speculation.

Three other passengers reportedly witnessed the incident. They said the woman tried to run away after jumping off the vehicle but was chased by the kombi driver who apprehended her and called Masvingo Rural Police.

The child’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital and the woman is in the same hospital under arrest.
