Institutions of higher and tertiary education should take practical steps to embark on income-generating initiatives to support their operations instead of waiting for Government assistance, Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Aocate Martin Dinha has said.

Opening the Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) Printing Press last week, A Dinha said taking own initiatives to support university operations would lessen the burden on the fiscus.

“We welcome efforts from universities to generate income for their operations. The present economic dispensation in the country is very difficult. Success or failure will depend on taking initiatives to survive,” he said.

“Reliance on handouts will not take one far where handouts do not exist or are hard to come by.”

A Dinha said universities could earn money from income-generating projects and plough back the money to improve the welfare of their students.

The BUSE printing press will benefit students through low cost production of books and stationery.

The printing press will have photocopying machines, book binders, scanners, internet and other needs for the students. BUSE Vice Chancellor Professor Eddie Mwenje said the commissioning of the printing press would provide a conducive learning environment.
