ZIMBABWE’S Valeria Bhunu remained on course for a gold medal in girls’ tennis singles at the ongoing African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games.

But boys’ top seed Ronzai Saurombe crashed in the semi-finals at the Bulawayo Athletics Club yesterday.

Other Zimbabwean players, Rufaro Chirewa and Tameredzwa Mariga, also bowed out.

Bhunu beat South African Caitlin Herb 6-1, 6-1 in her semi-final tie. Saurombe lost to Malawi’s Chisomo Lumeta 3-6, 7-5, 4-6.

“The semi-final was a hard one. I struggled with the serve and my arm was not responding when I needed to pull in the hard shots.

“I am looking forward to the next game,” said Bhunu.

The trio of Saurombe, Chirewa and Mariga were expected to return to the courts for the doubles and the mixed doubles clash late yesterday.
