Lives are at risk as it emerged that the National Blood Services of Zimbabwe is left with only two days supply of blood.

This comes as the country prepares for the festive season and blood demand is high due to increased road accidents and maternal births. In an interview, NBSZ spokesperson Esther Massunda, said blood type O was the only group left. Massunda said the blood stocks were expected to increase today. She said the Youth Donor Month, which started yesterday saw youths donating blood as part of efforts to increase the blood bank.

On the first day of the youth donor month commemorations more than 70 people out of a target of 100 youths had donated blood by mid-day yesterday.

The Youth Donor Month commemorations are also held in other countries in the region such as South Africa as part of efforts to boost blood stocks.

“The turnout of the first day of the Youth Donor Month was successful as we are almost reaching our target for today of 100 youths,” she said.
