POLICE in Marondera have concluded that the 12 year-old Waddilove Primary School pupil who died early this month committed suicide because he had been mocked by other learners.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Norbert Muzondo said Asterix Chombe Phiri, who was in Grade 7, was reportedly angry that other students had jeered at him saying that he was a dirty person.

Muzondo said the insults did not go down well with Asterix and when other pupils had gone for evening studies, he sneaked out of the hostel to the lost and found property storeroom.

Inside the storeroom Asterix is alleged to have used a bed sheet to hang himself from the roof.

His lifeless body was discovered later by other students who alerted the police and his body was ferried to Marondera Hospital for a post-mortem.

However Asterix’s father, Nhamo Phiri, has been quoted in earlier media reports claiming that he suspected foul play in the cause of his son’s death.

Phiri told the media then, that the Waddilove Primary School authorities had barred him from talking to other pupils at the school to establish what could have happened to his son.

He said sources at the school told him that Asterix was seen crying in the afternoon but he did not tell anyone what was troubling him.

Phiri was also not happy that the Marondera Rural Police had refused to give him the post-mortem results.

“I was only shown the results indicating that he died from asphyxia but they could not give me a copy of the results,” said Phiri.

According internet search results asphyxia results from an extreme decrease in the concentration of oxygen in the body.
