A LOWER Gweru man, aged 23, has appeared in court charged with raping his three minor sisters aged between nine and 11 years in a case that shocked this Midlands community.

The man cannot be named to protect the identities of the minor victims but is from Njini Village under chief Bunani.

He was this week brought before Gweru Regional magistrate, Morgan Nemadire, to answer charges related to three counts of rape.

The court remanded him in custody to May 28 for continuation of trial after he pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say in November 2013, on a day not specified, the three complainants went to stay at their grandmother’s residence where their accused brother lived following their mother’s death.

The four siblings’ father had remarried.

The court heard that the three girls slept in the kitchen and kept their blankets in the accused’s room.

On the evening in question, they went to collect the blankets during the evening but the brother closed the door and proceeded to rape his nine year old sister once while the other two sisters were forced to watch.

On another occasion, the court heard, the brother sneaked into the kitchen where the girls slept and raped each of them in turns and telling them to keep the matter secret.

The children said they informed their grandmother who rubbished the reports.

“When we told our grandmother for the first time that we had been raped she said we should not talk about such things as we could get our brother arrested so we just decided to endure in silence,” narrated one of the juveniles.

The matter came to light after one of the girls confided in her teacher who had quizzed her as to why she was limping and having difficulties in walking.

The teacher immediately reported the case to social welfare and the police leading to the brother’s arrest.
