A 20 YEAR-OLD burglar broke his leg trying to flee a mob pursuing him after robbing a private college in Masvingo, a local court heard.

Joseph Chiguvare had to spend two weeks in hospital under police guard after he broke his leg while trying to evade a citizen arrest.

Prosecutor Fidelis Nyamukondiwa told the court that Chiguvare broke in at Kyle College on numerous occasions and stole goods worth $4,000.

He was remanded in custody to 27 February for continuation of trial when he appeared before Magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla.

The court heard that since July last year Chiguvare would break into the privately owned college’s dormitories and steal pupils’ cell phones, calculators, laptops and other electrical gadgets.

His luck run out when he attempted another break in but was spotted by ancillary staff who charged towards him to effect an arrest. He took refuge on a rooftop but was spotted.

Sensing danger, Chiguvare attempted to escape by jumping from one roof top to another but fell to the ground and sustained a leg fracture.

He was taken to Masvingo central police station where he admitted stealing from the school before being rushed to Masvingo provincial Hospital for treatment.
