CARA Black of Zimbabwe and her Indian partner Sania Mirza will this week be gunning for their first Grand Slam title together when they take part in the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros in Paris. The French Open is the second Grand Slam of the year after the Australian Open and Black and Mirza are in the top half of the women’s doubles draw where they are seeded fifth, and will open their campaign at Roland Garros with a tricky first round tie against the unseeded pair of Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Israel’s Shahar Peer.

And if the 35-year-old Black and Mirza manage to negotiate their way past Hantuchova and Peer, they will meet either the pair of Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic and Shuan Zhang of China or the duo of Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Poland’s Alicja Rosolska in the second round.

Black and Mirza must be fancying their chances of lifting the doubles title at this year’s French Open after having recently done well in the WTA Tour where they lifted the Portugal Open crown in Lisbon for their third title from five finals since they combined forces late last year.

In fact, according to Indian daily newspaper, the Sport Star, Mirza is upbeat ahead of the French Open after winning the women’s doubles title at the Portugal Open recently where the 27-year-old player from Hyderabad and her partner, the 10-time Grand Slam winner Black of Zimbabwe, defeated Eva Hrdinova of the Czech Republic and Russia’s Valeria Solovyeva 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

“Well, it is always a great feeling to win a WTA title. And this is in a way special, for it is my 20th title overall in the circuit,” says Mirza.

For the record, Black and Mirza were playing their third final of the season, having finished 6runner-up at Indian Wells and Stuttgart earlier. The duo has won three titles from five finals.

“It has been a good year so far, having entered a couple of finals including the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open. More importantly, I am ranked World No. 3 in doubles. I am trying to do as well as possible,” says Mirza in a chat with Sport Star.
