CATHOLIC Saints of Harare won this year’s Bright Stars’ Kid Aid Under-17 soccer tournament at Ngoni at the weekend. Catholic Saints beat hosts Bright Stars Academy 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the final of the tournament which featured giants Dynamos and CAPS United.

The small town came alive when 14 Under-17 teams from three provinces – Harare, Midlands and Mashonaland West – battled in the annual event. CAPS United lost in the semi-finals. Bright Stars Academy striker, Kudzai Zhuwaki, was voted Player of the Tournament.

CAPS United twins, Takudzwa and Takunda Chinembiri, who are just 15, caught the eye.

Cefas Bobo, the event co-ordinator, said the tournament was aimed at giving the teenage stars a platform to showcase their talents.

The chief sponsor of the event, Father Joe Arimoso, who is also the owner of the host team Bright Stars Academy, said they will spread the net of the participants next year.

“We will include other competitors from as far as Hwange, Mutare and Masvingo in our next tournament.

“Since the formation of the academy, we managed to send some kids to Poland with Peter Ndlovu in 2012 and out of the 16 kids who went, six of them were from Bright Stars Academy.

“I think this shows the people of Zimbabwe how committed we are as an academy in promoting teen football,” Arimoso said.
