NATIONAL cricket team all-rounder Elton Chigumbura has bounced back as the captain of the national One-Day Internationals team three years after he was relieved of his role as captain in all formats.

The explosive right-handed batsman will share captaincy with Brendan Taylor who stays on as Test team captain. A raft of changes also saw the elevation of Andy Waller to director of coaching with Steve Mangongo replacing him as national team coach.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) new board chairman Wilson Manase told IndependentSport that Waller would oversee developmental programmes throughout the country among other duties.

“The board has made a decision to elevate Waller to the position of director of coaching and one of his tasks is to ensure the growth of the pool of players,” said Manase. “We have also elevated Mangongo to the position of national team coach. Mangongo is a soldier who has seen it all and his experience and expertise will be valuable for our national team.”

Mangongo will assume his new role when Zimbabwe takes on South Africa and Australia in a tri-series next month.

Waller will be tasked with ensuring that he secures contracts for players abroad to help aid their development.

Waller was only appointed national team coach last year and presided over a famous Test win over Pakistan the same year.

Mangongo has finally landed the top job after he was overlooked when Waller was appointed in a race that also featured Grant Flower who was later appointed batting coach.

The announcement of the new appointments arrived with another low for Zimbabwe who lost their fourth and final ODI match against Afghanistan by 100 to end the series in a draw.

Chigumbura and Taylor each scored one run in yesterday’s defeat to share the spoils in the four-match series.

Chigumbura will start in his new role when Zimbabwe takes on South Africa in the ODI series.

Taylor has four Tests in which to lead the team this year with one against South Africa and three against Bangladesh.

Manase said there are other proposals that have been made for different committees which will be announced in due course.
