China is committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s education sector to improve the lives of children in the country, Beijing’s top diplomat in Harare has said.

At the handover ceremony of 24 generators to the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry yesterday, Ambassador Lin Lin said 12 primary and secondary schools around Tokwe-Mukosi Dam in Masvingo would benefit from the donation.

“We are honoured to provide 24 generators for 12 primary and secondary schools which symbolises the goodwill and concrete action to support the improvement of educational infrastructure in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“As Zimbabwe’s all-weather friend, China is more than willing to support your efforts in infrastructural building. Children are our future and we believe that providing children with proper education is the best way to ensure a nation’s sustainable development,” Ambassador Lin said.

The Zimbabwe Red Cross partnered with the Chinese Embassy in the initiative to assist schools that were affected by the floods in areas surrounding Tokwe-Mukosi Dam. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora said the donation would improve learning at rural schools.

“This donation comes at a time when my ministry is working hard to improve the conditions of learning and teaching at our schools, especially in the rural areas,” he said.

“The provision of energy at the selected schools will make it possible for schools not only to teach ICT’s, but also enable second chance education programmes to be undertaken at the schools.” Zimbabwe Red Cross Society vice president Mrs Angella Sigauke hailed China’s initiative, saying they should continue to compliment their organisation’s humanitarian efforts.
