Government will next week demolish at least 1 000 houses that are still under construction on wetlands and other undesignated places in Chitungwiza. Deputy Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Joe Biggie Matiza said this after a tour in the town that revealed that many people were going ahead with construction despite a council directive to stop.

The stands are part of the 8 000 that were recently declared illegal after Government’s land audit in Chitungwiza.

Next week’s demolitions, according to the deputy minister, would target new structures that were built well after the directive to stop and an order for the demolition of the 8 000 structures.

“During the tour, we found that new structures were sprouting in the areas where construction was stopped.

“People are still building illegal structures on the land in question and next week we will demolish them.”
