A MARONDERA based cop was this week arraigned before the courts after he was arrested for smuggling 40 cases of illicit booze from Mozambique.

Jackson Chakanyuka, 41, an assistant inspector and radio technician, was found with 25 cases of royal whisky and 15 cases of Zero gin which are not allowed in the country.

He pleaded guilty to contravening a section the Customs and Exercise Act which prohibits possession or importation of illegal goods when he appeared before Mutare magistrate Waini Makamera on Tuesday.

Chakanyuka was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with an alternative to pay $200 fine.

Prosecutor Cuthbert Bhosha told how on May 20, police officers set up a road block at Odzi to search vehicles that were coming from Grange turn-off along Harare road.

The officers saw a Toyota Vits belonging to Chakanyuka and stopped vehicle.

The court heard that the cops found the back seat and boot of the vehicle was packed with cases of the illicit brews which had been smuggled from Mozambique via an undesignated entry point near Sheba.

In passing judgment, the magistrate said, as a police officer Chakanyuka, was supposed to lead by example and not to take law into his own hands.
