ALL is set for the launch of this year’s Under-16 boys and Under-17 girls Copa Coca-Cola football tournament at Chemhanza High in Wedza this morning. Chemhanza are the defending champions in the boys section and Chidyamakono from Masvingo are the girls’ title holders. Chemhanza beat Howard 3-1 in last year’s tournament while Chidyamakono dismissed Vainona, who had won the title since the introduction of the girls’ competition in 2011.

The competition got underway last week when schools in the country’s 10 provinces took part in the cluster rounds to qualify for the district competition.

This year’s tournament will be staged in Harare.

And today will see the official launch of the tournament at Chemhanza.

Coca-Cola senior franchise brand manager, Takunda Jinda, said they were looking forward to a better and bigger competition.

“Copa Coca-Cola is one of the tournaments that attract large numbers of participants and we hope the same will happen this year. The zones have already started, some schools are already out.

“What’s special about this year’s competition is that it has both boys and girls and it’s also coming in a special year when we have the World Cup.

“At the same time Coca-Cola will be sending two players Tatenda Munditi (goalkeeper) and Tatenda Tumba (midfielder) to the World Cup.

“They are leaving on June 8 and will be there for a week. They will watch the opening match for the World Cup.

“Most of the countries are not sending teams, they are sending representatives and they will be put into various teams to compete,” said Jinda.

Munditi and Tumba made to the into the All-Stars Copa Coca-Cola African team during last year’s Copa Coca-Cola International Training Camp in South where the Zimbabwean team emerged as the best after beating Uganda 3-0 in the finals. The camp featured more than 10 countries drawn from Africa.

The Copa Coca-Cola tournament has over the years grown to become Zimbabwe’s prime secondary schools and Under-16 competition.

The event is run in partnership with the National Association of Secondary Schools Heads. Representatives from the sponsors, Coca-Cola, and the Nash leadership from the 10 provinces are expected to attend today’s launch.
