THE Zimbabwean couple arrested at Beitbridge Border Post with six gold bricks valued at R6 million were granted bail on Monday.

Peter Spies, 39, and wife Elizabeth, 37, appeared at Musina magistrate court facing charges of unlawful possession of precious metals.

In a telephone interview with NewZimbabwe.com, the police spokesperson for South Africa’s Limpopo province, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said: “The couple were granted a R50 000 bail but they have not yet paid.

“They will appear again in the same court on June 26, 2014.”

The couple were arrested on May 9 by police and members of the South African Revenue Authority after they were seen behaving in a suspicious manner.

Their vehicle was searched and six gold bricks were discovered in a parcel wrapped with a black plastic bag hidden.

The parcel was hidden inside the arm rest compartment of the passenger seat.
