Zimbabwe has become the first country to tour Pakistan in six years. The Zimbabwean squad landed in Lahore this morning to play three One Day Internationals and two T20 matches.

The visiting team has been provided high security cover involving 6,000 police and constant surveillance by commandos and helicopters.

The tour is a first by a full ICC member since Sri Lanka visited in March 2009, when their team bus was attacked by militants that resulted in the death of eight people with seven players injured.

Since then Pakistan has been hosting home games in the United Arab Emirates.

Even now risks remain high in Pakistan and the massacre of 45 minority Shia-Muslims in an attack on a bus in Karachi last week nearly prompted Zimbabwe to pull out at the last minute.

The attack on Sri Lankan cricketers wasn’t the first time a cricket team had been caught up in Pakistan’s political violence.

In 2002, 14 people died in a suicide blast outside a Karachi hotel when New Zealand were touring Pakistan. The blast prompted the tour to be cancelled.
