EDUCATION minister Lazarus Dokora has come under attack from a fellow Zanu PF MP, Justice Mayor Wadyajena, for saying pupils should be allowed to carry cell phones and condoms to school if their parents wished so.

Wadyajena said Dokora should go because he has failed the education sector by introducing controversial policies that risk destroying gains achieved since independence.

The young politician said this while handing over computers to Kadzidiriri School in Nembudziya.

“The education sector is critical for the development of the area and Minister Dokora has failed owing to inconsistencies in policy framework and through banning extra-lessons.

“Why do you want cell-phones at schools? Pupils must use their phones at home because at school there are computers for research. Dr Dokora is derailing the education system,” said Wadyajena.

Wadyajena said Dokora controversially scrapped off extra lessons, and recently told Parliament that parents who want children to carry condoms to schools should provide them and not expect government to do so.

Dokora also openly encouraged pupils to carry mobile phones to school, a move which lawmakers said would contribute to poor pass rates.

But Wadyajena said promoting the use of cell phones and condoms in schools was tantamount to promoting debauchery in learning institutions.

Wadyajena is a key-loyalist of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa and last year, in the built-up to the Zanu PF congress, the young Midlands MP was among those who led a campaign against then VP Joice Mujuru and Didymus Mutasa, the party secretary for administration.

Both Mujuru and Mutasa were eventually reduced to mere card carrying members before being fired from government.

Mutasa has since been expelled from the party.
