After sealing a four-year deal as Zimbabwe cricket’s substantive coach, Dav Whatmore’s first assignment is to lead his “chosen ones” into the dangerous subcontinent domains of Pakistan for a tour that will involve two T20s and three ODIs beginning next week.

For a man who has signed a long term contract, Whatmore has already given a boost to the national domestic leagues with his first team selection for a difficult tour to Asia.

While Charles Coventry’s recall has dominated the headlines in recent weeks, it is equally important to note the best players from the local domestic Pro50 Championships have been picked for national duty.

A scintillating Pro50 championships performance has earned forgotten Zimbabwe star bowler Christopher Mpofu a call up into the national team, a national team debut selection for Mountaineers batsman Roy Kaia as well as another opportunity for left arm seamer Brian Vitori.

Convener of selectors Givemore Makoni confirmed the importance of the local competition in national team selection.

“If you notice, [Roy] Kaia was our highest run getter in the domestic Pro50 Championship while Chris Mpofu was the best wicket taker, he has come back really g so domestic cricket is important in helping us come up with the national team,” Makoni said.

“We look at various factors such as statistics and form at local and international level. Those guys performed well in the domestic season and that’s why they have been picked,” he added.
