A CHEEKY Masvingo taxi driver tried to knock down a police officer but could only smash his bicycle in the process, as he tried to evade arrest over a traffic offence.

For the offence, Farai Matute, 35, was this past week slapped with an 11 month prison sentence.

But Masvingo magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla conditionally suspended four months of the prison term.

The incident happened during day time on May 6 this year.

Matute, who was allegedly driving a Toyota Ipsum, was caught picking up passengers from an undesignated pick up point in the city centre.

Appearing for the state, Fidelis Nyamukondiwa told the court that Constable Munashe Chindeka and Constable Precious Munhumwe were on bicycle patrol on the day in question when they came across

Matute committing the offence.

On being ordered to stop, Matute instead, immediately started reversing his vehicle, made a quick u-turn and drove straight towards Chindeka who out of fear, jumped off his bicycle and fell on the road side.

The court was further told that Matute straight away drove over the bicycle which he left in a mangled state.

Luck ran out for him when he got apprehended at a road block along the Masvingo-Mutare after the aggrieved police detail had notified his workmates who were manning the vehicle check point.

In mitigation, Matute said he did not have any intentions of knocking down the officers but was just fleeing from paying a fine to the officers as he had been made to pay another one earlier during the day.

“I tried to escape from the police because l had in fact paid a fine to police in the morning, so if l had to pay another fine again l was to go home without a cent for my family,” he told the magistrate.

For the offence, the court further ordered him to pay $200 as replacement value for the damaged bicycle.
