Elton Mangoma was detained for alleged criminal abuse of office during his tenure as energy minister.

MDC Renewal Team Treasurer-General Elton Mangoma was on Tuesday detained by police for allegedly flouting tender procedures when he was in government.

According to his lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, the former energy and power development minister was arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police Law and Order section for alleged criminal abuse of office during his tenure as energy minister between 2010-2013.

He was interrogated by Inspector Mandizha before he was detained. Lawyers said attempts to have the former Makoni North MP released so he could attend court proceedings from home were not entertained by the police who proceeded to lock him up after charging him.

Mtetwa said the police alleged that Mangoma directed a Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority managing director to cancel a tender and award the job to OK Zimbabwe.

Jacob Mafume the MDC Renewal spokesperson said Mangoma’s arrest was desperate attempt by the “hopelessly corrupted system”, to cover-up their corrupt activities.

“This is a criminal abuse of the police force to settle scores by people who were not awarded tenders. ZANU (PF) has hopelessly corrupted the system that the corrupt are now doing the arresting”, said Mafume.
