A Former MDC-T councillor has appeared in court on allegations of swindling 50 residential stands meant for Masvingo city councilors and employees.

Misheck Gapare appeared before Magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso facing fraud charges and was remanded to July 12 for trial on $200 bail.

Prosecutor Makaita Chikamhi told the court that on 31 January 2012 two property developers, Wellington Mahwende and Gordad Dunira, pledged 50 stands in Victoria Ranch to Masvingo City Council.

The court heard that the stands were supposed to be distributed to councilors and workers of the local authority.

The residential stands have an estimated cost of $200,000.

The court was told that Gapare who, as then ward 8 councillor and chairman of the public works portfolio, submitted false names of councillors and employees who were supposed to benefit from the offer and converted all the stands to his own use.

The fraud came to light after the local authority made a follow up on the pledged stands from the property developers.

Officials were told that the stands were handed over to Gapare sometime back, prompting the businessmen to report the matter to the police.

Gapare denies the charges and is being represented by Martin Murerio of Matutu and Associates.
