AN alert father responded on time to a cry for help to save his 14-year old daughter from rape, a magistrate heard in Marondera last week.
This was revealed during the trial of a 23-year old Raymond Chakwangwa who was sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to rape his underage girlfriend.
According to the State, on November 20 Chakwangwa visited his girlfriend and asked her to accompany him to his home and the teenager complied.
On the way, Chakwangwa asked the girl to be intimate with him but she refused.
Chakwangwa then forced himself on the girl but she started calling for help. Her father, who was close by, heard the commotion and came to her rescue and reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of Chakwangwa.
Throughout the trial, Chakwangwa maintained his innocence.
However, the magistrate Victor Muhammad said there was overwhelming evidence against Chakwangwa and sentenced him to five years before setting aside one year on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period.
Prosecutor Emmanuel Dera pleaded for a tougher sentence saying cases of rape were now high in the country and that Chakwangwa had wasted the court’s time by denying the charge and thereby forcing an unnecessarily lengthy trial.
