FIVE more people died in separate road accidents countrywide on Sunday, bringing the number of those killed since December 15 to 86.

Police yesterday said 600 people were injured in 1 054 road accidents recorded during the festive season.Last year, 81 people died while 461 others were injured in 880 accidents recorded during the same period (December 15 to 28).

“We have also impounded 2 375 unroadworthy vehicles and issued 99 571 tickets to motorists for various traffic offences,” said police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi.

Most accidents have been attributed to speeding, overtaking errors, lack of judgement by drivers and failure to give way.

There is also an increase in young, unlicensed and reckless drivers on the roads.

Chief Supt Nyathi said on Sunday, five people died countrywide while 11 were injured in 42 road accidents recorded.

The same day (Sunday) police impounded 86 vehicles and issued 6 790 tickets to motorists for various offences.

He said during the same day last year, six people died while 31 others were injured in 42 road accidents.

“As the holiday progresses, the Zimbabwe Republic Police appreciates the decline in the number of fatal accidents being recorded. We urge drivers to continue exercising caution. They should avoid speeding and remain alert in order to prevent accidents,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.
