ZIMBABWE will this year field five athletes at the World Junior Championships scheduled for Eugene, United States this month. The championships will run from July 22 to 27 with athletes from across the globe competing in all track and field events.

Zimbabwe’s team is made up of sprinter Michael Songore, who will compete in the 200m and 4x100m events, while Pride Lusinga will take part in the 400m hurdles and 4x100m and Enlita Ncube will participate in the 1500m race.

Shingirai Hlangayo and Kudakwashe Nyahuma complete the 4x100m relay team.

The five athletes qualified for the championships during the different regional and international competitions which were acting as qualifiers and Songore booked his place last year during the World Youth Championships in Ukraine.

The team will be accompanied by coach, Silas Muringani, team manager Enias Nhoro and Cynthia Khumalo is the chaperon. Nhoro said preparations were already underway with the athletes training in their respective provinces with their coaches.

“The generality of the preparations we have left it to the coaches who made them qualify. They are with their respective coaches.

“We don’t want to disturb the programme they were following. We had given them the programmes as early as last year.

“Like when we come back we identify athletes with potential to qualify (for different events) and then give them a coaching programme to follow. After we have competitions we then check who is going to compete in which event.

“It has proved to be working well and cheaper in terms of sponsorship for camp,” Nhoro said.

They are expected to leave on July 19 and return on July 30.
