A FOREIGN tourist died Wednesday while several others were left injured when a goods train Tuesday ploughed into a tram that was carrying 30 tourists and 5 crew members at the Victoria Falls main station.

The deceased tourist, who was yet to be identified, was among two passengers who sustained serious head injuries and were flown to South Africa to receive medical treatment.

Reports Wednesday said the tourist has since died from the injuries. Scores injured in the tragic accident were treated and discharged.

Police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the tragic incident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm an incident that occurred in Victoria Falls on the first of July 2014 at 1700hrs involving a tram train which was moving along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo road where 30 passengers were injured, 30 of them were foreign tourists.

“Whilst the tram train was at the Victoria Falls main station, the train operator stopped intending to change the railway line and the tram train was hit from behind by a goods train which was coming from the same direction.”

Police say the tourists were from the United States of America, Australia and the Netherlands.

A tram is used to ferry tourists for sight-seeing past the rain forest from the Victoria Falls bridge.

The accident, although rare, puts a damper over renewed efforts to lure foreign tourists back to the economically distressed country.

The tragedy follows on the heels of the mysterious January disappearance of a tourist on Nyanga Mountain.
