FORMER guerrilla war commander Wilfred Mhanda died late last night from a prolonged cancer ailment. He was 64.

Family spokesperson Munyaradzi Mhanda told NewZimbabwe.com Thursday afternoon the Zimbabwe Liberators Platform leader succumbed to colon cancer while receiving treatment at government’s Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

“He had cancer of the colon which was diagnosed in 2011 and was successfully treated,” said the family spokesperson.

“He went through chemotherapy for six months which was completed and he was negative but then there were some complications that developed.

“He however died last night between 9 and 10PM at Parirenyatwa Hospital when he was waiting to undergo a procedure which was meant to expel the gases that had developed in his stomach as a result of chemotherapy.”

He continued: “It’s a big loss to the family and we have lost a visionary leader who assisted us in many ways in terms of aice and in terms of individual developments. We have lost a great man.”

Mhanda, once a powerful ZANLA commander, was a g critic of President Robert Mugabe’s controversial rule and was among a crop of former liberators the veteran leader had systematically ostracised.

Mourners are gathered at Number 7 Sudbery Road, Monavale, Harare while funeral arrangements are to be aised.
