A NINE year-old girl from Gwelutshena, Matebeleland North’s Nkayi area died after being bitten by a rabid dog, police confirmed.

Police identified the deceased minor as Ulert Mpofu from Hojeni Village.

Witnesses say villagers were forced to stone the vicious dog to death when they found its sharp teeth still sunk into the girl’s hand.

The attack, police say, was reported nearly a month later by her parents who had realised her condition had deteriorated.

Provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Eglon Nkala said after her attack, the girl was taken to clinic and treated three times but she continued foaming from the mouth, leading to the eventual death.

“We received a report about the death of a nine year old girl who was bitten by a dog which had rabbis,” Nkala said.

“The girl had been sent by her grandmother to a neighbour’s homestead on March 6 at about 6pm and that is when she was attacked by the dog.

“She was rushed to Gwelutshena Clinic the following day where she was treated and discharged. She fell ill again and was rushed to Nkayi Hospital on April 4 where she was treated and discharged.”

Assistant Inspector Nkala said the girl’s condition worsened on April 5, and she was rushed to Dakamela Clinic where she succumbed to the infection.

“As police, we would want to urge members of the public to make sure their pets are vaccinated and that they rush to hospital anyone bitten by suspected rabid animals,” said the police spokesperson.

Rabbis is a fatal zoonotic viral disease that is transmitted through the saliva or tissues from the nervous system of an infected mammal to another and dogs are considered the main natural reservoirs of rabbis virus.
