Godwin Gomwe yesterday appeared in court on charges of violating the Postal and Telecommunications Act and criminally insulting another party member.

Gomwe (34) reportedly called Cde Winnie Madekufamba a witch before accusing her of being a “gamatox”.

Gamatox is a term that was used by some zanu-pf officials to refer to people who are accused of plotting to topple President Mugabe.

It is alleged he also insulted the party’s Harare Central One District chairperson Cde Abraham Samushonga with unprintable words over the phone.

Gomwe, who is being represented by Mr John Ndomene, appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe, who granted him $200 bail with the State’s consent coupled with some stringent conditions.

He was ordered to report once a week at Budiriro Police Station, not to interfere with witnesses and to reside at his given address until the matter is finalised.

The embattled youth leader has three pending extortion charges before the same courts in which he is accused of conniving with six other party officials to extort over $46 000 from housing co-operatives in Harare using the First Lady’s name. He was granted $1 000 bail by the High Court on Thursday while his alleged accomplices who are being represented by Mr Rungano Mahuni were granted $500 bail each, attached with some stringent conditions.

Two of Gomwe’s alleged accomplices in the extortion charges, Fidelis Ndaradza (32) and Norah Toronga (38) also appeared before the same magistrate yesterday on separate records charged with theft and obstructing the course of justice.

They were granted $200 bail each.

Prosecutor Mr Michael Reza, alleged that on December 5 last year, Madekufamba was attending the Zanu-PF National Congress when she was approached by Gomwe. Gomwe reportedly called her a witch and accused her of being a “gamatox” member aligned to former Zanu-PF National Commissar Webster Shamu.

He also threatened to incite other party youths to assault her.

On May 6 this year, Gomwe allegedly phoned Cde Samushonga and insulted him using unprintable words.

Cde Samushonga is said to have put his phone on the speaker so that his friend he was with could hear the insults and be a witness.
