FORMER Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) chief Gideon Gono’s accountant George Farai Chambara on Tuesday appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court on charges of fleecing his ex-employer of more than $200,000.

Chambara, 41, who, filed an assault charge against Gono, a month ago, appeared before Magistrate Donald Ndirowei and was granted $100 bail.

Gono’s poultry company, Lunar Chickens, is the complainant in the case.

According to papers before the courts, Chambara was employed by the company as an accountant and his duties included posting petty cash and other transactions into the business pastel accounting system.

It is alleged he allegedly misrepresented to have paid for fictitious expenses in transactions carried out between October last year and March this year.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira argued said these transactions were fraudulent, as there were no documents to support the payments made, as required by company policy.

Gono’s company alleges it suffered prejudice in the sum of $203,025 as a result of the alleged scam and nothing has been recovered.

Chambara is due back in court on August 15 for court proceedings.

In defence, Chambara’s lawyers submitted a letter to the court against Gono accusing the former Apex Bank chief of assaulting him for allegedly accessing “sensitive” company information.

“On June 3 2014, the accused was subjected to inhuman and degrading conduct reminiscent of the dark ages of slavery and colonialism where employees had no rights whatsoever,” said the defence lawyers, Mambosasa Legal Practitioners.

“Client (Chambara) was whipped by the Supreme Chairman, Dr Gideon Gono on unfounded allegations of stealing undisclosed company information.”

In the letter addressed to police commissioner Augustine Chihuri, the former Lunar Chickens accountant also accuses Gono for abusing police services.

“On June 4, Chambara reported an assault perpetrated against him by his employer (Gono) under IR Number 060744 at Harare Central police station,” the lawyers added.

“Over a month has lapsed since our client (Chambara) reported the assault perpetrated against his person by Dr Gideon Gono, yet no action whatsoever has been taken by the police.

“We wrote a letter to Gono on June 10 claiming damages for constructive dismissal, unpaid salaries stretching from January to April and also for pain and suffering.”

The lawyers added that Gono requested stay of prosecution in the assault case in order to have his lawyers look at the charges preferred.

“The employer responded on June 27 requesting that litigation be stayed until the employer instructs its attorneys substantively on our client’s (Chambara) claims.

“To his utter dismay he (Chambara) was raided by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department serious fraud squad on allegations of fraud against his employer,” the defence counsel argued in the letter.

Gono is also embroiled in a better civil wrangle with his former top aide Munyaradzi Kereke who wants authorities to investigate his former boss for criminal abuse of office.

Kereke has since approached the Constitutional Court and the matter is set to be heard in September.
