GOVERNMENT has declared war on land barons and cooperative chairpersons illegally selling State land to unsuspecting home-seekers, saying they will soon be arrested.

Most local authorities have been failing to control the mushrooming of illegal settlements.

Acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Retired Colonel Joseph Mhakayakora said all land barons will be brought to book.

“As you know the minister also set up another committee which is currently investigating the goings on at Caledonia Farm chaired by town planner Percy Toriro.

“We are not tolerating any nonsense. We have warned those who were involved in such dealings that their days are numbered.

“They may escape the law now, but the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” he said.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo last week appointed a 15-member aisory committee to aocate, co-ordinate and lobby for sustainable human settlements in the country.

The committee is chaired by CBZ group chief executive Mr Never Nyemudzo and is deputised by Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe executive director infrastructure projects Mr Desmond Matete.

It is expected to bring sanity by ensuring efficient delivery of low to medium cost housing in line with Zim-Asset.

Zanu-PF secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Pupurai Togarepi, who is also a committee member said: “I want to appreciate the efforts of Government especially the part where money is no longer going to chairpersons of co-operatives. There is chaos out there. People of Zimbabwe are very keen to build their own homes, but there are others who have got a habit of eating where they have not put anything.”

“As youths we are going to participate fully because definitely there is nothing more important in human life than to have something above your head.”
