FIFTEEN towns and cities are set to benefit from a US$2 million government solar street lighting project which the local authorities say will help reduce accidents and cases of muggings.

The project, being implemented by ZESA subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Distribution Company (ZETDC), seeks to light up the main streets in the central business districts (CBD) of the targeted urban centres by August this year.

Towns and cities benefiting include Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare, Chinhoyi, Bindura, Kadoma, Kwekwe as well as Rusape.

Rusape town sectary, Joshua Maligwa, welcomed the development saying the local authority had long struggled to repair streetlights due to financial constraints.

He said the project, financed by government, would help reduce accidents and cases of muggings in the town’s CBD.

“We are very excited about this development because it will reduce cases of muggings and accidents during the night,” he said.

“Even during load shedding period we will best assured that our streets will be well-lighted.”
