GWERU Gweru City Council workers resumed their strike last Friday after management failed to pay them salaries for February.

The employees had suspended the two-week-long industrial action after management agreed to pay the outstanding amounts by the end of last week.

In a meeting between council workers and management brokered by provincial affairs minister, Jason Machaya last week, employees were promised to be paid February 2015 salaries as well as this month remunerations by last Thursday.

“Payment of February 2015 salaries and back pay for May 2014 for Grades 1 to 7 is to be paid by Thursday 14 of May 2015,” part of the meeting resolutions read.

Workers committee secretary general, Frank Muzorera, said they were surprised that management had failed to pay them despite the agreement.

“We have been told there is no money, but recently we managed to raise $680,000 through the workers’ revenue enhancement committee,” he said.

Muzorera said the strike would now continue until council honours its pledge to pay workers on agreed dates.

Gweru City Council has been struggling to meet salary obligations and blames declining revenue for its predicament.
