THREE MDC-T councillors in Gweru urban have been suspended on allegations of abuse of office and council property.

Local government minister, Ignatius Chombo suspended Albert Chirau (ward 11), Kenneth Sithole (ward 4) and Moses Marecha (ward 5).

“Following receipts of allegations of abuse of office and council property by yourself, I am, in terms of section 114 (1) of the Urban Councils Act Chapter 29:15, suspending you as councillor… with immediate effect.

“I will shortly appoint an investigation team to look into the allegations and aise you accordingly,” reads part of Chombo’s letter dated 21 May 2015.

Midlands South provincial spokesperson, Munyaradzi Mutandavari blasted Zanu PF for “having a hand” in the suspensions saying the whole move was politically motivated and a deliberate target MDC-T dominated councils.

“This does not come us a surprise since, of late, Kasukuwere has been saying they now want to target MDC-T controlled urban councils,” Mutandavari said.

Last week, Kasukuwere, who is Zanu PF national political commissar warned that the ruling party is planning a massive onslaught directed at MDC-T-dominated councils over poor service delivery.

“Frank discussion on urban matters is going to be core in addressing the malaise. It can’t be business as usual, the time has come,” Kasukuwere, who is also environment minister, said on micro blogging site Twitter.

“Zanu PF will now have to start addressing urban challenges head on. Service delivery and incompetence of local authorities concerned.”
